2. What is the science behind acupuncture?
Acupuncture works by stimulating various systems in the body, particularly the nervous, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, urinary and reproductive systems. Acupuncture stimulates nerve impulses that travel via the spinal cord to the brain which then alter the levels of certain chemicals that influence the regulatory system within the body. For example, acupuncture can stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, or reduce the level of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine. In this way, acupuncture can invigorate the body’s own internal regulatory systems and encourage the body to heal itself.
